Planting
Lettuce enjoys sun to partial sun for location, the key is to avoid an area that receives late afternoon sun. For late summer lettuce you should plant the lettuce in partially shaded areas the avoid late afternoon sun.
Lettuce can be planted either in early Spring or early Fall to avoid the heat of the Summer that can cause the lettuce to bolt.
Lettuce can be directly sowed in the garden or seedlings can be used to speed up the process.
If you plant seeds you will need to thin them since they should have a few inches of space between plants for best results.
The planting depth is just 1/8 to 1/4 inch in lightly fertile soil for best germination.
Lettuce does not need to be fertilized.
Watering
Lettuce needs to be kept moist especially when you first plant the seeds.
Harvesting
Once the lettuce leaves reach 4-6 inches tall you can either cut the larger leaves about 1/2-1 inch above ground or you can cut the entire plant off 1/2-1 inch above ground. Both of these methods will allow for a 2nd and even a 3rd crop to be harvested.
